Haying
2012 Date: June 9

Howell Living History Farm will put old fashioned wisdom to the test on Saturday, June 9, “Haying Day.”

hay barn

“Of course you make hay while the sun shines,” said farmer Rob Flory, who back in January, chose the date for the event based on the forecast in the Old Farmers’ Almanac.

According to the Almanac, the weather will be sunny and warm while the historical farm makes hay with its animal-drawn mowers, rakes, loaders and hooks...and with, of course, some good old-fashioned luck.

From 10:00am-4:00pm, visitors to the 130-acre farm can watch, photograph and even help as farmers work in hayfields and put loose hay in the mow of a barn with a pulley-operated hayfork.  Mow filling and raking operations will take place during the morning; mowing and  hayloading are planned during the afternoon.
