Internships
Since 1984, the Friends have supported internships in sustainable agriculture, living history, market gardening and animal traction. Interns have gone on to work for organizations such as the Peace Corps, United Nations, agricultural extension services, and on production, research and educational farms worldwide..
Land Preservation
The Friends are working with federal, state, county and local government, and within the preservation community to prevent the loss of surrounding farms, historic landscapes and viewsheds ... and to strengthen the Pleasant Valley Rural Historic District, whose central feature is the Henry Phillips Farm (Howell Living History Farm).
Collections Care
Over 1,500 period tools, field implements, household furnishings and other artifacts have been acquired with the help of the Friends, forming the permanent and working collections needed to operate the farm.
Educational Programs
Each year, the Friends provide over $50,000 in support of the Farm's educational programs for schools, community groups and the public. The programs reach over 50,000 visitors annually - a third of them school children.
Period Art & Music
The Friends sponsor annual workshops in period art, crafts and trades, as well as public events featuring music, storytelling and dance.
Community Outreach
The Friends provide material and volunteer support for programs that take Howell Farm into the community such as the annual ISLES Trenton Plowing Event, Mercer County Earth Day, Hamilton History Night, Homefront, Farmers Against Hunger, Weed & Seed After-School Programs, and donations of crops to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.
Howell Farm Website
Since 2000 the equipment and services needed to construct and maintain the farm's website have been donated by members of the Friends.
Volunteerism
Each year, over 15,000 hours of volunteer time are donated to the farm through programs supported and managed by the Friends. Volunteerism supplies one third of the help needed for farming, maintenance and program operations.
