New Jersey State History Fair - "What am I" Contest |
For those of you who stopped by the Howell Farm corner of the field at Washington Crossing State Park on Saturday, May 12 and took a guess at our “What Am I?” item the guesses have been tallied. The guesses ranged from ice breakers, to wine press, post hole mold, water jug, item used to transport milk or water, horse shoe shaper or to place horses foot on, nut smasher, post pounder, a fermenting box for whiskey, watermelon breaker, support, counter weight, hammer, used to carry beehive, butter churn, tortilla flat maker/mold, potato masher, cheese press, stand on to make butter, corn kernel remover, plow a horse or cow would pull, something you put stuff in, old fashioned corn can, to tie a horse on and threshing. Certainly the most popular answer with some 31 votes was a corn /wheat masher/pounder. Five people were closer with their tamper answer and another eight where really close with soil/dirt tamper. But our winner with the most accurate and detailed answer – Sara & Lauren Kohn - “We think it is for pounding dirt underneath paving stones or to make dirt paths.” Well Sara and Lauren, part two is the best answer. According to our donor, they used it to pound down the dirt in the rows (paths) in the garden between the furrows. Sounds like an awful lot of work. Just let the kids run up and down a few times and that dirt will be pounded. Thanks all for playing and come on over to visit the Farm. Sara & Lauren your gift basket prize is waiting at the Howell Farm Visitor Center.
